Tokyo Tower was built in 1958 at a total cost of $8.4 million. It was originally constructed to support television broadcasting, radio antennas were installed in 1961. Interestingly, the transition to digital broadcasting was problematic for the tower as it was not tall enough to support the delivery of signal. As a result, the Tokyo Skytree was built in 2012.
